Contesting and Negotiating International Health Policies and Health Management Guidelines: An Analysis of the Management of Type Two Diabetes Mellitus in Trinidad
Vishala Parmasad is a Doctoral Candidate at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada. She is also a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar. Vishala received her MSc from the University College London and her MD/MBBS from theUniversity of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago. Vishala's research focus falls into the areas of medical anthropology and science, technology and society studies. Her dissertation research explores sociocultural dimensions of the diagnosis and management practices associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, in Trinidad, West Indies. Her broader research interests include problematising and expanding medical and epidemiological notions of the "social determinants of health", "barriers" to healthcare, and "health-care delivery" from both the physician and patient perspectives. She has previously researched the prescribing practices of general practitioners for paediatric upper-respiratory tract infections, diabetes guidelines and their receipt within community health settings, and blood procurement and replacement donation. -
