Finishing the Doctoral dissertation
The purpose of my doctoral thesis is to map the kind of presumptions there are about the agency of addicts in different (moral) arguments in different academic fields that touch upon the theme of addiction. I intend to analyse the kind of presumptions of agency, i.e. differences, these literary resources hold of addiction and addicts. In practice this means that first I identify the arguments in these texts and then analyse the presumptions of agency and autonomy that they have in a critical and systematic way. By indicating inoperative presumptions about the agency of addicts in the moral arguments I will increase discussion on addiction also on a more concrete, social level and facilitate the study of the ethical, legal and social implications of addiction and its research as well as its treatment. -

Addiction, action and morality
Susanne’s doctoral thesis deals with addicts and addictive behaviour from the point of view of philosophy of action and agency and morality. She is interested in philosophical problems concerning addicts’ action and behaviour. She has worked in several bioethical projects and published articles on questions of individual autonomy and autonomous choice in bioethics as well as issues concerning addiction. During her stay in the spring of 2012, Susanne is writing her doctoral dissertation and working on an article concerning the relation between recent neuroscientific research and addicts’ moral responsibility for their action.
