'Stigma on the Move'- how stigma changes over time and why this matters
The overall objective here is to finish the final two chapters of the academic monograph ‘Stigma on the Move’ for submission at the end of the summer 2026. The expected outcome is a globally relevant, theoretically helpful and empirically robust text which is useful beyond the niche of medical sociology and Science and Technology Studies, to researchers using stigma as a basis for research and intervention more widely across the world. Dr Farrimond and Professor Michael are embedded in existing global health networks, and hope to make more connections at Brocher, through contact with other leading researchers. We also have the capacity to promote this book as we both work in EGENIS (Exeter Centre for the Study of the Life Sciences, University of Exeter) so can commit to additional promotional resources such as a hybrid book launch and an international online workshop on the topic of stigma change. EGENIS is a world-leading research centre exploring the nature of the life sciences and their ethical, social, political and philosophical implications. Dr Farrimond leads the Health and Biomedicine strand at EGENIS. The EGENIS website is here: https://www.exeter.ac.uk/research/centres/egenis/
We would, if given the residency, use this as an opportunity not just to finish ‘Stigma on the Move’, but also to set up relevant networks of researchers interested in stigma and anti-stigma initiatives in global public health from both amongst other Brocher members and the WHO, and use these to build future projects challenging stigma in health settings and drug cultures.
The two outcomes would therefore be a) a full draft of the monograph ‘Stigma on the Move’ and b) a network of scholars interested in stigma and challenging stigma, both theoretically and on the ground in global public health.
