The Future of the Body: Phenomenology, Medicine and the Neoliberal Subject
The primary objective of this residency is to have dedicated time to write and to work on the manuscript for the monograph that is arising from my 2-year research project. As such, the primary expected outcome is to draft the first two chapters of the monograph which will arise as a result of the first year of research that I will undertake at Durham University as a International Junior Research Fellow in the Institute of Advanced Study, while affiliated with the Philosophy Department and the Centre for Medical Humanities. These chapters will employ the methodology of genealogy in order to examine how the discourses of biomedicine and neoliberalism have shaped conceptions of the human body in the post World War II period, focusing on existing emerging biotechnologies which aim to shape the appearance of the body. In addition to this writing work, the residency has two further objectives: 1) to begin planning a public lecture series for the 2015-2016 Academic Year at the Trinity Long Room Hub in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, on the theme of 'The Future of the Body' and 2) to establish a relationship and potentially future collaborations with the Brocher Foundation.
