Involving patients in understanding infection control using visual methods
Objectives – Brocher residency - completing thesis - plan for journal articles that can be written from thesis - networking with other Brocher residents - networking with infection control experts in Switzerland Objectives - thesis Employing a primarily ‘interventionist’ ethnographic study of the way in which patients’ needs and actions intersect with IPC practices in hospital environments, this research addresses the following five research questions: - How do patients experience infection prevention and control? - How do patient/ clinician interactions shape understandings of infection prevention and control? - Do patients contribute to infection prevention and control? If so how? - What experiences help or hinder their efforts to enact infection prevention and control? - What kinds of processes support patient/ clinician collaboration to enable safer care around infection prevention and control?
My PhD research uses a multi-method approach, including interviews, ethnographic observations and video-reflexive ethnography, to explore how patients and carers experience, understand and enact infection control. I specifically focus on roles patients play in preventing infection transmission. This research also offers patient and carer feedback to frontline clinicians and policy makers that can inform patient-centred re-design of infection control services.
