Ethical aspects of research and treatment of HIV/AIDS / women's health
Ruth Macklin has a PhD in philosophy and has been engaged in research and writing in bioethics since 1971. Her first position was on the faculty in the Philosophy Department at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, following which she served on the professional staff of The Hastings Center for four years. Her current position is Professor of Bioethics in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the Bronx, New York. She also serves on three committees at the World Health Organization. Ruth´s research centers on the ethics of research involving human subjects, especially clinical trials and behavioral studies conducted in developing countries, with a particular focus on reproductive health and HIV prevention studies. Her current project at the Brocher Foundation addresses these latter topics in a study of ethical challenges in research on HIV preventive microbicides and the female condom.
