Causation, Models of disease, and Epidemology
Alex Broadbent studied philosophy in Cambridge and London. Since completing his PhD in 2007 he has held research and lecturing positions in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Cambridge. In 2011 he takes up a permanent Senior Lectureship in Philosophy at the University of Johannesburg.
Alex works on a range of philosophical issues in metaphysics, epistemology, the philosophy of science and the philosophy of law, centering around the theme of causation. He is currently working on a paper on the use of epidemiological evidence to prove the cause-in-fact element of liability for the tort of negligence. He is also working on a project entitled Philosophical Issues in Epidemiology, part of which involves organising a series of workshops in Cambridge during 2010. His work at the Brocher Foundation is also part of this project. He has published work on the causal classification of diseases, and he is currently particularly interested in general causation and epidemiological concepts associated with measuring the "strength" of causal associations.
