Stor(y)ing health: an ethnography through Portuguese biobanks and health contexts
Brígida Riso is a PhD Fellow (Sociology) in ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon, Portugal. She graduated in Nursing and holds a Master of Science in Medicine, Health and Society. She was co-chair of Science and Values working group of COST Action CHIP ME (2013-2017), a research network dedicated to the discussion of ethical, legal and social issues of new genetics. Her PhD research is focused in biobanks as health scenarios where conceptualizations of health and illness could be rearranged. It also aims to explore the construction of sample’s identities-biographies and the complex network of power-knowledge relationships that enable it. Her work is based in ethnography and qualitative methods of enquiry, combing sociology of health and social studies of science. She is also interested in citizen participation in biomedical research.
My research is currently focused in biobanks and human bio-objects in health contexts. The aim is to understand how the bio-objectification process of human biological samples is contributing to produce and reproduce biomedicalised notions of health, based in individual bodies but mostly outside of the human body. Also it aims to frame the reality of biobanks in the context of the Portuguese healthcare system and scientific context.
