Epidemiology of tuberculosis and cost analysis of treatment in Nepal
My research focuses on public health of tuberculosis – first, the epidemiology and diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. I am investigating the genotypes of the pathogen that may impose differential risk to disease. Second, to understand the current growing cases of drug resistance; I have been working on finding genetic drug resistance patterns that may contribute in designing diagnostics. Tuberculosis is considered as disease of poverty and has huge socio-economic impact to the patient and community. Additionally, I am interested in health economics referring to direct patient costs of treatment seeking, tuberculosis diagnosis, treatment and estimate the total cost until end of treatment among male and female cases, and patients with different income status. During my stay at the Brocher Foundation in 2013, I am planning to do data analysis and write manuscripts that will be submitted for publication to peer-reviewed journals. I believe the publication will be of significant importance to tuberculosis control program in Nepal and researchers worldwide.
